Do your German lessons for kids follow the national school calendar in the UK?
Our weekly German classes for kids follow the national school calendar in the UK. However, during the Autumn, Spring, and Easter half-terms, we run intensive German courses for children. So, classes continue for those parents who want their kids to progress more rapidly in the language. Concerning our private German lessons for children, parents decide whether or not lessons continue during school breaks.
The schedule of our German classes for kids
Below is our current schedule of German classes for young learners. If you're unsure of your child's current German level, we offer a 15-minute assessment. The assessment is free of charge but requires a commitment to a trial class. If you don't find a suitable course, please contact us to register your interest, specifying your child's age, German level, and preferred days and times. We'll get back to you promptly to accommodate your needs. Since young learners require different approaches and materials depending on their age, we have established three age groups: 6-10, 10-14, and 12-16 years old. These groups are rough guidelines, so if you believe your child might fit into one of the groups but does not quite meet the age requirement, please email us to discuss further.
Do you only offer online 1:1 German lessons for children or also in-person German lessons for children?
We’re happy to offer both. Many families choose our online German lessons for children (£90 for 60 minutes) because they’re flexible, easy to schedule, and just as interactive as in-person tuition.
For families who prefer face-to-face learning, we also provide in-person German lessons in London (zones 1–3). These are £100 per hour or £145 for 90 minutes, with all travel expenses included.
Whichever format you choose, your child will benefit from engaging, personalised lessons taught by an experienced native tutor – designed to build confidence, fluency, and long-term success in German.

Frequently Asked Questions – German Lessons for Children and Teenagers
What age can my child start learning German?
We welcome young learners from a very early age. At Olesen Tuition, children can begin German lessons for children as young as 4 years old for private one-on-one tutoring. For our small group classes (which are conducted online), we typically start at about 6 years of age to ensure kids are ready to learn in a group setting. This means even preschoolers can get started with German in a fun, gentle way through private lessons, while school-aged kids (6 and up) can enjoy interactive group classes with peers. Our programs cater to children all the way up to 17 years old, so whether your child is in early primary school or in their teens, we have a suitable class for them.
How are lessons structured for young learners?
Our German tutoring for kids is designed to be engaging, play-based, and suited to each child’s age. For the youngest learners, we incorporate games, songs, storytelling and other fun activities to introduce German naturally. Lessons typically cover all four language skills – speaking, listening, reading, and writing – but in an age-appropriate manner. For example, a lesson might include a short, interactive game to practice new words, a colourful story or song in German, and simple exercises to reinforce basic phrases. The goal is to keep children interested and motivated. Sessions for very young kids are kept reasonably short (our one-on-one lessons can be 30–45 minutes for little ones) to match their attention spans, while older children might have 60-90-minute sessions. Whether your child attends in-person or joins our online German classes for young learners, the structure remains interactive and supportive, with plenty of visual aids and positive reinforcement to make learning German effective and enjoyable.
Do you follow a curriculum (e.g. Key Stage levels)?
We do have a structured curriculum, but we also tailor it to each child rather than strictly following a one-size-fits-all syllabus. For younger children (Key Stage 1 and 2 ages), our focus is on building basic vocabulary, simple sentences and a love for the language, since German isn’t usually taught formally in UK primary schools. We use proven frameworks like the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to guide progression – this provides clear skill milestones and helps track progress in a structured way. For school-aged students, we can certainly align our lessons with what they’re doing at school or with Key Stage targets. In fact, for older kids and teenagers, we often prepare students for GCSE or A-level German exams, following the relevant exam board specifications. Our tutors use textbooks and age-appropriate materials as a backbone for each course, supplemented by custom resources to target your child’s needs. In summary, our curriculum is flexible, ensuring comprehensive coverage of German language skills and aligning with school curricula (Key Stages or exam syllabi) as needed, while still being personalised for each young learner.
Are group classes age-specific or mixed?
We group children in classes by their age range and level to make sure everyone learns comfortably. In practice, our small group courses are age-specific – for example, we run separate groups for younger kids (around 6–10 or 8–12 years old) and different classes for teenagers, rather than mixing a six-year-old with a fifteen-year-old. This way, the teaching style and content can be tailored to the group’s developmental stage. Each group class is limited to about 4–8 students of similar age and proficiency, which creates the ideal setting for interaction without one child being out of place. The online German classes for young learners that we offer are live and interactive, and kids get to practice with peers close to their age. Within those age-banded groups, we also consider the children’s German level; for instance, a beginner class for ages 8–12 will have kids of that age who are all new to German. This approach ensures the lessons, activities, and pace are appropriate for everyone in the group.
How much homework is given?
We understand that children have busy schedules with school and other activities, so we keep homework reasonable and age-appropriate. For very young learners, we usually do not assign formal homework in the traditional sense – instead, we might suggest light and fun practice, like reviewing a few new German words with a parent, colouring an activity sheet, or listening to a German song or cartoon. The emphasis at that age is on exposure and enjoyment rather than written homework. As children get a bit older (toward Key Stage 2 and 3 ages), we may give small assignments to reinforce what was learned in class. This could be a short worksheet, a bit of vocabulary practice, or writing a few simple sentences in German. Any homework is meant to integrate with the lessons and reinforce key concepts rather than burden the student. Overall, homework in our kids’ German classes is kept manageable: just enough to solidify learning and build good study habits, without overwhelming the child. And if a student or parent prefers no homework (for example, for a young child), we can accommodate that by doing all practice during lesson time.
What are your tutors’ qualifications?
Our tutors are highly qualified native German speakers with a passion for teaching children. Every instructor at Olesen Tuition has years of experience in teaching German – in fact, all our tutors are fully qualified and have a minimum of ten years of teaching experience. Being native speakers, they bring authentic pronunciation and cultural insight to the lessons. Many of our tutors have taught in schools or language institutes and hold relevant degrees or certifications in language teaching. We ensure they know how to engage young learners; teaching German to a four-year-old requires a different approach than teaching a teenager, and our team is skilled at adapting to each age group’s needs. Additionally, all tutors are vetted (enhanced DBS checks), and professional – safety and quality are top priorities. In short, your child will be taught by an expert German tutor who is not only knowledgeable in the language but also friendly, patient, and excellent at working with kids and teenagers.
How do you track progress?
We take a supportive, continuous approach to tracking each child’s progress in learning German. During lessons, tutors are always observing what the student finds easy or challenging. They might do informal quizzes, quick vocabulary recap games, or periodic small tests to see how much your child has retained. For example, if, over a few lessons, we covered numbers and basic greetings, the tutor will naturally prompt the student to use those in subsequent sessions to ensure they’ve got them down. We also use the CEFR levels (A1, A2, B1, etc.) as a guideline to measure progress as your child advances. This gives us a clear framework – we can say, for instance, that a student has moved from A1 to A2 level in listening comprehension, which means very tangible development. If your child is preparing for an exam or has specific goals, we set milestones (like topics or grammar points mastered) and monitor those closely. Parents are kept in the loop as well: we provide feedback on how the child is doing after lessons or via email updates, so you’ll know what improvements we’ve seen and what we’ll focus on next. In group classes, we might have occasional review sessions or short progress reports at the end of term. In one-on-one lessons, progress tracking is even more tailored – the tutor will adjust the pace if needed and can give you a detailed overview at any time. Overall, our philosophy is to celebrate each child’s progress (even small wins build confidence!) and ensure they are steadily moving forward. By setting clear goals and mini-milestones for our German tutoring for kids, we create a roadmap that keeps students motivated and lets everyone see how far they’ve come.
Are classes suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely – our classes welcome complete beginners. In fact, many children who join us have little to no prior exposure to German, and our programs are designed with that in mind. We have beginner-friendly courses where no background knowledge is assumed. For instance, we offer an introductory German course for kids that starts from scratch, for children with no prior knowledge of the language. In these beginner classes, we start with the very basics: simple greetings like hello and goodbye, numbers, colours, and family members – the foundational words and phrases. The tutors speak slowly and clearly, using lots of visual cues and repetition, so that even young kids who are hearing German for the first time can follow along. We also make sure the environment is encouraging: children are not put on the spot in an intimidating way; instead, we use games and songs so they pick up words naturally. As they progress, we gradually build on what they know. Even in group settings, beginners are with other beginners, so no one feels left behind. By the end of a beginner term, your child might be able to introduce themselves in German and understand basic questions – which is a big confidence boost! And if your child is a complete beginner joining a bit later (say a new term or mid-term), we can offer a little catch-up help so they feel comfortable. In short, our German lessons for children are absolutely suited for complete beginners, providing a gentle and fun introduction to the language that will set them on the path to more advanced skills.
Can my child join during term time or mid-course?
Yes, we strive to be flexible so that your child can start learning German at any point in the year. If a group class is already underway for the term, it’s often possible to join even after the course has started – we’ll just help your child catch up on what they missed. Typically, this might involve providing some lesson materials or scheduling one or two revision lessons to cover the fundamentals that the class has learned so far. This ensures your child doesn’t feel lost when they join the ongoing group. We’ve successfully integrated students mid-term by giving them a bit of one-on-one support initially, so they can comfortably slot into the group’s level. For private lessons, there’s no issue at all – you can begin private tutoring at any time during the term or even in school holidays since those are scheduled individually. It’s also worth noting how our schedule aligns with school terms: our weekly group classes generally follow the UK school term calendar (taking breaks during typical half-term and holiday periods), but we often run optional intensive courses or holiday camps during school breaks. That means if you’re keen for your child to continue learning through a half-term or summer holiday, we have special sessions available. Conversely, if you only want lessons during term time, that’s fine too. In summary, your child can join during term time without waiting for a new term – we’ll make sure they get any needed catch-up, and we offer plenty of entry points throughout the year so that enthusiastic learners can start right away.
How do private lessons differ from group classes?
Olesen Tuition offers both private 1:1 lessons and small group classes for kids, and each format has its own advantages. In a private lesson, your child gets one-on-one attention from the tutor, allowing for a fully personalised learning experience. The tutor can tailor every activity to your child’s interests, pace, and learning style – for example, spending extra time on pronunciation if needed or zooming ahead in topics your child excels at. Scheduling is also very flexible for private lessons: you can arrange sessions at times that suit your family’s routine (after school, weekends, etc.), and in our case you have the option of in-person tutoring (if you’re in London) or online sessions. Essentially, private lessons are all about personalised instruction and flexibility.
Group classes, on the other hand, are a shared learning environment with typically 4–8 students, and we currently run these as live online German classes for young learners (via a video platform) so that families can join from anywhere. In a group class, the lesson is more structured around a set curriculum for that group and there’s a fixed schedule (e.g. every Wednesday at 5 PM). The big benefit is that kids get to interact with peers – they can practice conversational German with friends in class, play educational games in teams, and learn from each other’s questions. This makes learning very engaging and often more fun for children who enjoy social interaction. The small group size means each child still gets attention and can participate actively, but they also experience a bit of healthy competition and cooperation. We ensure group classes are kept interactive: kids might do role-plays, ask and answer questions with classmates, or enjoy group challenges, which helps build confidence in using German in real-life scenarios.
Another difference is in pacing: group classes move at a pace suitable for the whole group, which is great for consistent progress, but not as individually customized as a one-on-one session. If a child in a group needs extra help or is ahead, the teacher balances that within the class (and we might recommend some extra support if needed). In a private lesson, the pace is entirely based on your child – you can slow down or speed up as seems fit. Also, with private tutoring, you can target specific goals (for example, focus only on writing skills if your child needs that for school) in a way that a set group curriculum might not always allow.
In both formats, you’ll have experienced native German tutors teaching the class, and we cover core skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) comprehensively. Both are effective; it really depends on your child’s learning style and your goals. Some families start with private lessons for a while to build a foundation, and then join a group class for the social aspect (or vice versa). To sum up, private lessons differ by offering individualized, flexible instruction and scheduling, whereas group classes offer a social, interactive learning experience following a structured syllabus. And remember, our group classes are online-only at the moment (with students grouped by age/level), while private lessons can be done online or in-person – so you have options to choose what’s best for your child. Each approach has its merits, and we’re happy to guide you based on your child’s needs.
