I'm Jens Olesen, the founder and director of Olesen Tuition- one of the UK's leading German language schools. Having been educated at RWTH Aachen, the London School of Economics, and the University of Oxford, I have over 25 years of experience preparing students for GCSE and IGCSE German, and a thorough understanding of what is required to excel. To meet the growing demand for GCSE German lessons, I have hired a team of experienced native tutors who know what is needed to excel in GCSE German. We have experience with all major GCSE German (AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR) and IGCSE German exam boards (CAIE). Our GCSE German tuition has been reviewed by many parents whose children we have successfully prepared for their exams, and it has been rated "excellent" on Google, ProvenExpert, and Trustpilot.

Mabel N.

"My daughter did her GCSE this year. She tried few tutors before, finally she decided to stay with Jens. The lessons with Jens are never boring but useful. Her marks jumped from 70 and to over 90 after one year of lessons with Jens. In the end, she got a 9. Highly recommend Jens for teaching German."

Richard K.

"Jens is simply excellent. We have used him for my son's GCSE and A-level, and he is unwaveringly perfectionist, 100% professional and very easy to deal with. His teaching is comprehensive, covering written and spoken German and examination curricula in all detail."

Isabelle N.

"I highly recommend Jens Olesen as a German tutor. Our son Paul has been tutored by Jens for both his GCSE and A level in German. Jens has done a stellar job preparing Paul, enabling him to achieve A* grades in both exams. While being methodical and clear in the way he teaches, Jens also makes lessons a lot of fun which is so important. Paul always looked forward to his Sunday evening Skype call with Jens. Thank you very much for all your hard work, Jens!"

Frequently Asked Questions (GCSE German tuition)

Q: Do you offer group lessons or only one-to-one tutoring?

A: We offer both one-on-one GCSE German lessons and small group classes. In a one-on-one session, the tutor can tailor every lesson to your specific needs, and you get maximum speaking practice and instant feedback. However, we understand some students may want to learn with a friend or in a small group, and we can accommodate small group lessons if, for example, two or three students of a similar level want to study together. Group lessons can be a fun, collaborative way to learn – you get to practice German with peers, and it can reduce the cost per person – but the pace of the class will be balanced to suit everyone in the group. Whether you choose a one-to-one or group session, we’ll ensure the lessons are engaging and effective. However, one-to-one tutoring remains the most focused way to address your individual strengths and areas for improvement.

Q: How often should I have lessons?

A: We generally recommend having at least one German lesson per week to maintain steady progress. Consistency is key when learning a language – regular weekly practice helps reinforce new vocabulary and grammar. Many students take one or two lessons a week, depending on their goals and schedule; for example, some do a mid-week lesson and another on the weekend for extra practice. As exams approach, you might increase the frequency or schedule some intensive revision sessions to boost your confidence. Ultimately, the ideal lesson frequency can be adjusted to your needs and availability – we’ll work with you to create a lesson plan that fits your timetable and keeps you on track for your GCSE.

Q: How do online GCSE German lessons work?
A: Online GCSE German lessons are typically one-on-one tutoring sessions conducted via a live video platform. You connect with a qualified German tutor in real time, allowing you to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing just as you would in an in-person lesson. The tutor will share learning materials on screen, guide you through exercises, and provide instant feedback on your pronunciation and grammar. Because the lessons are online, you can learn from the comfort of home and schedule sessions at times that suit you, making it a convenient way to prepare for your German GCSE.

Q: What if my school doesn’t offer German?
A: Even if your school doesn't offer German, you can still study the subject and take the GCSE exam independently. Many students in this situation choose to learn German through online courses or with a private tutor outside of school. You would then register as a private candidate for the GCSE German exam at an approved exam centre or another school that offers German, so you can sit the same exams as other students. With a structured study plan and the right support, it's entirely possible to prepare for and achieve a good grade in GCSE German outside of a traditional school class. We have many years of experience in preparing private GCSE German candidates for their exams.

Q: How long does it take to get to Grade 9?
A: Achieving a Grade 9 (the highest grade) in GCSE German depends on your starting point and dedication. Typically, students study German for at least two academic years, leading up to the GCSE exams (for example, starting in Year 10 and taking the exam at the end of Year 11). If you're beginning with no prior knowledge, reaching a top grade usually requires consistent effort over that period – attending regular lessons, practising outside of class, and immersing yourself in the language. With intensive study or prior experience (for instance, if you already have some background in German), you might progress faster. Still, in general, you should plan for a couple of years of focused study to confidently reach Grade 9 level, unless you book an intensive set of lessons with us.

Q: Do you tutor German for the International GCSE?
A: Yes. We also tutor students for the International GCSE (IGCSE) in German. The IGCSE is the international version of the GCSE exam, offered by exam boards like Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, and its content and level are very similar to the standard GCSE. Our tutoring covers the IGCSE German syllabus comprehensively, preparing you for all exam components – including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Whether you are taking GCSE or IGCSE German, the lessons will be tailored to the exam requirements so you can confidently aim for a top result.

Q: Can IGCSE students join your weekly GCSE classes and revision courses?

A: Yes, IGCSE students can absolutely join our weekly GCSE classes and revision courses. While the content covered in the IGCSE and GCSE German exams is largely the same, there are a few differences in the exam format between the two boards (e.g., Cambridge IGCSE and AQA/Edexcel GCSE). To ensure that IGCSE students receive the tailored support they need, we recommend booking a few 1:1 lessons alongside the group classes. This allows us to focus on any specific differences in the exam format and target areas that may require additional attention. Whether it's preparing for particular question types, refining speaking skills, or building confidence for the listening and reading papers, our 1:1 sessions will ensure that IGCSE students are fully prepared for their exams. Our weekly classes provide a solid foundation, and the revision courses give extra exam-focused practice – and with the added benefit of individual attention, your child will feel confident and ready to excel in their IGCSE German exam.

Q: Which exam boards do you cover for GCSE German?
A: We tutor for all the major GCSE German exam boards. Whether your exam board is AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, or WJEC/Eduqas, our lessons are aligned with the specific syllabus and exam format of each board. In practice, the core content for GCSE German is similar across exam boards, but we make sure to cover any board-specific topics or differences in how exams are structured. If you’re not sure which exam board your exam will be under, we can help you figure that out and tailor your preparation accordingly. The goal is to ensure you’re fully prepared and confident for the exact exam you’ll be taking, no matter which board it is.

Q: How much do online GCSE German lessons cost?
A: Our GCSE German tutoring is competitively priced and charged on a per-lesson (hourly) basis. For one-to-one lessons, we have a standard hourly rate of £90 per hour, and we offer discounted packages if you book a block of lessons in advance. If you opt for a small group session, the cost per student is lower than one-on-one, making it a budget-friendly option for friends or siblings learning together. All learning materials and resources are included in the price, so there are no hidden fees. Please contact us or check our Pricing page for the most up-to-date details on lesson costs and any current special offers.
