Hello, my name is Jens Olesen. I'm the founder and director of Olesen Tuition - a language school specialising in bespoke German lessons. Before I founded Olesen Tuition in 2015, I graduated with first-class honours from RWTH Aachen University, and then went on to do my Masters at the LSE and my PhD at the University of Oxford. Having worked as a German tutor for over 25 years, I have successfully tutored thousands of students who are now fluent in German and build a reputation as one of the best German tutors in the United Kingdom. We offer online German courses with up to 5 permanent students and one-on-one online German lessons that are designed for rapid progress. While our private German lessons have the advantage that everything we are going to do is tailored to your individual requirements, our small online German classes will help you gain conversational confidence at a lower rate. So whether you want to learn German for business, to communicate with friends or family, or to excel in an exam, we are happy to adapt our lesson plans and materials to make sure you achieve your aims. Learn German online wherever you are with an experienced German teacher
Our German students are spread across the globe- from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Russia to Singapore and the USA, which only goes to show that it is possible to learn German online with us wherever you are. We are based in London, so our timezone is GMT. Since our first lesson tends to be at 7am and my last lesson sometimes finishes at 11pm, you have a pretty good chance of finding a convenient time for your lesson.
What does a typical online German lesson with you look like?
Our online German lessons aim to strike a balance between speaking German, discussing a text, grammar training, and the composition of short texts as written homework, which we correct outside of our tutorials. In our experience, German is too challenging a language to be taught purely through conversations. That is why we will practice listening, reading, writing and speaking in more or less equal measure.
A typical lesson of ours begins with the discussion of a text. We ask our clients to summarise a text in their own words, and we will intervene with hand signals wherever necessary to indicate that they made a grammatical error on a grammar topic we had discussed before. While this might sound silly at first, it is a very effective strategy to provide feedback on their spoke German which allows our students to self-correct their mistakes. As a result, they gain confidence in speaking because they know they can communicate their ideas clearly, without sacrificing grammatical accuracy in the process.

What are the advantages of learning German online?
One key advantage is that you can learn German from the comfort of your home or office without having to leave, thus making it easier to fit lessons into your schedule. The other advantage is that online programs such as Skype and Zoom offer screen share and other features that allow us to literally be on the same page every step of the way. What experience do you have with online German classes?
We have been teaching German online for more than 15 years. We currently have Zoom, Skype and FaceTime students in Dubai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Moscow, New York, Singapore and Tokyo. Since the first lockdown in London in March 2020, we have taught all our lessons remotely, which allowed us to gain more experience with other online platforms.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept PayPal, Ping, bank transfer, and all major credit cards. While our one-on-one online German lessons run on a pay-as-you-go basis, our online German classes need to be paid in blocks of 5 classes if students to continue after the first session. Please note that all our lessons are subject to a 24-hour cancellation policy. Of course we're happy to provide invoices.
