Hello, my name is Jens Olesen. I founded the German language school Olesen Tuition in 2015. Since then, my company has become one of the leading providers of high quality German lessons. I graduated with first-class honours from RWTH Aachen University, and then went on to do my Masters at the London School of Economics and my PhD at the University of Oxford. Having worked as a German tutor for over 20 years, I have successfully tutored thousands of students who now speak German fluently. In addition, I hired an excellent team of native tutors, many of whom also work at Goethe Institutes in the UK and in Germany. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught many clients based in New York via Skype and Zoom, and as soon as the pandemic is under control, we are also looking to offer in-person lessons in the city.

Learn German in New York with an experienced native German tutor
Our German lessons are designed for rapid progress. We aim to strike a balance between speaking practice, listening exercises, grammar training, and writing tasks. The German language is too challenging a language to be taught purely through conversations. That is why we will practice listening, reading, writing and speaking in more or less equal measure.
If you are beginner, we first need to teach you the foundations in German, such as the conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in present and past tense, how to use articles before German nouns, and some basic vocabulary to get you off the ground, as it were. You will learn how to introduce yourself, how to order a meal in a restaurant, how to check into a hotel, how to ask for directions, among many other things. Once your German has reached elementary level, we are going to discuss texts on more sophisticated topics.
From intermediate level onwards, our lessons normally begin with the discussion of a text. We ask our students to summarize a text in their own words. While our students talk about the text, we give them hand signals to indicate grammatical errors on topics such as syntax or the cases which we had discussed before. While this might sound silly at first, it is a very effective strategy to provide feedback on their spoken German since it allows our students to self-correct their mistakes. As a result, our students gain confidence in speaking because they know they can communicate their ideas clearly, without sacrificing grammatical accuracy in the process.

We have been teaching German New York based clients online for more than 15 years. We currently have Zoom, Skype and FaceTime students all across New York City, as well as in Los Angeles, Melbourne, Moscow, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.

We are based in London, so our timezone is GMT. We are available for lessons in New York every day between 6am and 5pm EST.
