German Tuition: Weekly Classes or Private Lessons – Which Is Right for Your Child?

As the new academic year begins, parents often ask us the same question: is a weekly German class or private German tuition the better option for my child?
There is no single answer. The right form of German tuition depends on the student's current level, confidence, examination year, target grade and individual strengths and weaknesses.
For some students, the consistency and structure of a small weekly class is ideal. Others benefit more from individual tuition tailored entirely to their needs. And for students aiming for particularly ambitious GCSE or A-Level results, combining the two can be extremely effective.
When is a weekly German class the best option?
A weekly class provides continuity throughout the academic year.
Rather than waiting until the weeks immediately before an examination, students develop their German gradually, strengthening grammar and vocabulary while regularly practising listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Small classes also give students the opportunity to learn alongside others at a similar stage.

Weekly GCSE German classes
Our GCSE German classes provide systematic preparation for the examination throughout the school year.
We work on the grammar and vocabulary students need to express themselves accurately while developing their skills across all four GCSE components: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Regular practice also enables us to identify weaknesses well before the final examination period.
This structured approach contributed to 95% of our GCSE German students achieving Grades 8 or 9 in 2026.
Students who want an additional boost at key points in the year can also join our intensive GCSE German revision courses.
Weekly A-Level German classes
The transition from GCSE to A-Level German can be substantial.
Students are expected to use increasingly sophisticated grammar and vocabulary while developing much stronger translation, speaking and essay-writing skills. They must also prepare set texts and films and, depending on their examination board, complete an Individual Research Project.
Our weekly A-Level German classes and private A-Level tuition provide structured support across these different areas throughout the academic year.
Our 2026 A-Level students achieved outstanding A and A* results, including students who secured places at Oxford and Cambridge.
We also offer intensive German revision courses for GCSE and A-Level students during school holidays.
What about IB German?
We also offer specialist IB German tuition at Standard and Higher Level.
IB students need a combination of strong general language skills and detailed preparation for the specific written and oral requirements of the programme.
Regular tuition can help students expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy and become more confident and spontaneous speakers of German while developing effective examination technique.
When are private German lessons better?
Private German tuition offers a different advantage: every lesson can be adapted to the individual student.
It can be particularly useful when a student:
has specific gaps in grammar or vocabulary
needs additional help with writing or speaking
has lost confidence in German
has fallen behind at school
is aiming for an ambitious target grade
needs focused preparation for an assessment or examination
progresses at a different pace from their school class
Private tuition also allows us to spend more time on precisely the areas in which the student can make the greatest improvement.

Can students combine weekly classes and private tuition?
Yes – and for some students this is the most effective approach.
The weekly class provides structure, continuity and comprehensive coverage of the course, while private lessons can be used to address individual weaknesses or provide additional preparation for particular examination components.
This can be especially useful for students aiming for Grades 8 or 9 at GCSE or A/A* at A-Level.
Finding the right German tuition
The most important consideration is not simply how much tuition a student receives, but whether that tuition addresses what they actually need.
A student with excellent grammar but weak speaking skills requires a different approach from someone with large gaps in basic grammar. Similarly, a confident Year 10 student has very different requirements from a Year 13 student approaching their final A-Level examinations.
